VMware announces vCloud Director v1.5

VMware vCloud Director is the product used to provide cloud consumers with the ability to have self service provisioning and to deploy workloads without the need to understand the underlying technologies. VMware vCloud Director has been around for about a year now. VMware officially announced VMware vCloud Director version 1.5 yesterday. I thought I would provide some insight into some of the new features that have been included in the latest release.

New Features:

  1. Fast Provisioning (Linked Clones)
  2. Third Party Distributed Switch support for VLAN based and vCDNI
  3. vApp Custom Guest Properties
  4. VMware vCloud Messages
  5. vSphere 5 Support
  6. Microsoft SQL Server Support
  7. Five tuple firewall services
  8. IPSec VPN Services

I think the two most important features to be included is the support of Microsoft SQL databases, and the ability to use Fast Provisioning.  Lots of customers that I have spoken too, have wanted SQL Support for a long time.  Oracle is an expensive database product and if you do not currently use this in your environment then purchasing licenses for this have been difficult to justify to some CTO’s.  SQL support will now allow all those who only use SQL to easily deploy vCloud Director without the necessary expense and training of there DBA’s.
