VMware launches Pay as you go cloud

VMware launches Pay as you go Cloud Service

VMware officially launched the VMware vCloud Air Virtual Private Cloud On-Demand (or for short VPC On-Demand) yesterday 20th January.  This is a major milestone in VMware’s cloud offerings, and finally brings the agility to the cloud offering that enterprises and developers alike have been asking for. The Pay as you go offering, allows anyone to simply sign up with a credit card and start consuming resources.  You only get charged for what you use, and is billed on a per minute basis.  Unlike the subscription cloud VMware offer, this allows you to simply spin up a VM when you need for a particular amount of time and then destroy it and only get charged for that period it was in use.  Perfect for those seasonal demands when you have ran out of capacity in your data center and need something quick. The full announcement can be read on VMware’s blog […]

Celebrating four years at VMware

Wow! What can I say?  Its four years at VMware this month! I cant quite believe how quickly its gone by.  I received the email saying that my VASA cubes will be delivered shortly! How awesome is that, a company that honours your four and eight years with some really nice glass art. To read more about the VASA Cubes and how Diane Green got the idea, click here. During my four years at VMware, my life has changed quite significantly.  Both personally and professionally.  From a personal perspective, I have got married, had a child, moved from the UK to California, then had another child (the first Hill to be born outside of the UK).  Phew! What a crazy few years that has all been!  I need a break from the family craziness now and lets escape into the tranquility of my daily work… (Tranquil? Yeah right lol) Highlights of […]

New Role at VMware

New role at VMware – Senior Technical Marketing Architect

I have now been at VMware for nearly four years, and I still love every day.  I am pleased to announce that I am taking on a new role at VMware – I am joining the vCloud Hybrid Service Business Unit as a Senior Technical Marketing Architect. This is an exciting time for me.  This will be my first transfer out of Global Technology Solutions (GTS).  Having worked within the Cloud Practice, Center of Excellence, and Professional Services Engineering teams all created out of re-orgs, I am extremely excited to be moving to one of the key areas of VMware.  An added bonus and a cool thing about this move too is it gives me the opportunity to team up with Chris Colotti again.  I am also looking forward to working with Massimo Re Ferre again, I have missed his email debates, and will be enjoying picking them back up. My transfer […]

VMware VSAN – Virtual SAN – How to configure

This article shows how to enable a VMware Virtual SAN (VSAN) cluster within VMware vSphere.  If you are unfamiliar with VSAN, and what it is, I recommend reading the following articles. Duncan Epping’s Tech Preview of Distributed Storage Cormac Hogan’s Distributed Storage Tech Preview Lets start off by looking at the Pre-requisites of VMware VSAN, what do we need in place before we begin the configuration. Pre-requisites There are a number of pre-requisites that are needed, prior to configuring a vSphere cluster to participate as a VSAN.  The following list shows the minimum requirements to implement a VSAN. Minimum of three hosts. Each storage* host has a minimum of one SSD and one spindle hard disk. Each storage* host has a Pass-thru RAID controller as specified in the HCL.  The RAID controller must be able to present disks directly to the host without a RAID configuration. 10GB Network.  (1GB network […]

VMware Education site videos

Cool VMware Education sites

My manager Rupen Sheth found this cool VMware Education sites during some meetings with the VMware Education team.  I thought it would be good to share the links. The first site, is an educational site that contains videos for a number of different VMware products.  The URL for this site: http://vmwarelearning.com/  This site is really cool, and I personally like the videos based on vCloud Director. The second is more of a hierarchical path that you can follow.  This allows you to decide which courses and achievements you need to take to become fully certified in your particular career path.  There are three career paths to take, Architect, Developer and Administrator.  You can then dig deeper by looking at the particular areas and tracks of interest, for example, Cloud or End User Computing.  Its really cool, and also very useful.  The URL for this site is http://www.vmwarelearningpaths.com/     I have personally found these […]
