My VMworld Barcelona Schedule

Here is my VMworld Barcelona Schedule? I am a bit late posting this, I have noticed most other people have done this a while ago. I have two sessions I am presenting at VMworld Barcelona, and the times and dates are listed below. vcloud director map vcloud automation center

How vCloud Director constructs map to vCloud Automation Center

As most people know, I have been working with vCloud Director since its beta days.  My mind thinks of cloud in easy bite site chunks of Virtual Data Centre and Organisations.  I have now been spending a lot of my time and focus on vCloud Automation Center, but still always find myself thinking about the vCloud Director constructs and how they map over to vCloud Automation Center. In vCloud Director I have listed the most common constructs that are seen every day. Provider VDC Organisation VDC Organisation vApp Catalog vCenter Server Cluster or Resource Pool We all know and love these constructs, and know how they fit together.  I created the diagram below to help me understand where I need to go in vCAC to create the same object.  For example, if I wanted to essentially create an Organisation in vCloud Automation Center, where would I create this? The organisation […]

General Availability vCloud Director 5.5

General Availability vCloud Director 5.5

VMware vCloud Director 5.5 has now been released for general availability.  There are a number of new features in this release that will help customers deliver better cloud environments and they should consider upgrading to this release. Catalog Publish and Subscribe – vCloud Director 5.5 introduces the ability to publish catalogs, allowing them to be shared with external vCloud Director instances.  Published catalogs can also be password protected for additional security.  Once published, catalogs can be subscribed to by remote vCloud Director instances.  When a catalog is subscribed to the vApp templates and media files are copied from the publisher to the subscriber where they are made available, in a read-only capacity, to organizations at the remote location. Limit Access to Shared Catalogs – with vCloud Director 5.5 you can now limit the organizations that are allowed to access shared catalogs.  This provides added security by enabling organizational admins to […]

VMware SDDC Architects Group

VMware SDDC Architects Group

During VMworld VMware launched a Software Defined Data Center community, where architects could go for a few drinks and discuss all things SDDC.  This was a really cool idea, and allowed people to ask questions about the content they had seen during the course of VMworld.  Now that VMworld is over, people have been asking “where do we go for more information?  Who can we bounce ideas off?  Who can we speak too?”  The answer is: VMware SDDC Architects Group VMware has recently launched a LinkedIN group titled “VMware SDDC Architects” where everyone who is interested in SDDC Architecture can go for discussions and further information.  The description of the LinkedIN group: Having pioneered the technology behind the Software-Defined Data Center, VMware is now helping support technical architects who have led its adoption. Apply to this private discussion group to join discussions, share insights, and help shape the data center […]

VMware Virtual SAN Scalability Limits – VSAN

I have had a few questions off people recently asking what are the scalability limits of the new VMware Virtual SAN.  I thought I would post a quick table to show these. Description Limit Maximum number of disk stripes 12 Maximum number of failures tolerated 3 No of VSAN hosts per Cluster 8 Max number of IOps 120,000 Max number of Parallel vMotion per VSAN cluster 8 Max number of Parallel SvMotion per VSAN cluster 2 Max number of VMs per host 100 Max number of VMs per (evenly distrubted) VSAN cluster 800 Max number of disk groups per host 5 Max number of hard disks per disk group 6 Hopefully by providing these numbers, if you are thinking about implementing VMware Virtual SAN in your environments it will help you with the design. Note: Please remember that with the release of VMware vSphere 5.5, the VMware Virtual SAN product […]
