Clarifying the confusion on the VMware Cloud Strategy

Now that VMworld is in full swing, I have had the opportunity to talk to a considerable amount of VMware Service Providers, Customers, and Cloud Consumers.  Everyone has asked the question what does the AWS announcement mean for [Insert vCAN, vCA, IBM] as cloud providers. Its coming!  VMworld Barcelona is coming soon.  So soon in fact it actually starts on Sunday.  Wow, I can hardly believe it.  Still feels like VMworld USA was last week. This will be my last VMworld Barcelona working in the vCloud Air public cloud business unit, before I transition over to my new role in the Cloud Service Provider BU.  You can read about that in a seperate post. VMware vCloud Air has some awesome sessions this year and I would actively encourage all of you to see these sessions if you can get in. Leverage the cloud for a Veeam backup repository

Recently I gave a presentation at VMworld alongside Rick Vanover where we discussed how you can leverage the cloud for backup image storage. So on that topic, I wanted to provide some information on how you can leverage vCloud Air to provide you with an endpoint for Veeam backups. First let’s take a high level look at what Veeam has to offer. Veeam uses a backup appliance, much in the same way a number of other vendors do. This appliance essentially takes snapshots of virtual machines running either on vSphere or Hyper-V. Once it has these snapshot images, it moves them off to an external storage area, whether it be a physical SAN or virtual storage in the cloud. VMware vCloud Air VMworld sessions available Now that VMworld has passed, I thought it would be a good opportunity to share the presentations that I gave. VMworld was incredibily busy time again this year, and the interest in VMwares’ vCloud Air continues to grow. Throughtout my time presenting and attending VMworld, it is interesting to see how the cloud interest has grown over the past 7 years. People are no longer only interested in private clouds, they also want to leverage the public cloud to help ease the pressures on the current on-premises infrastructure. One of my sessions talked exactly about that, the journey to cloud, and how there is a lot of similarities between the virtualization journey and the cloud journey. vCloud Air Reference Architecture released

  Recently one of the projects I have been leading is to create reference architectures for vCloud Air. Lots of people have been asking me what the reference architectures actually cover, and what is the purpose of these. Firstly, I have produced a quick over video talking about a specific reference architecture “Data Center Extension”.  In this video I walk through at a high level what you can expect to achieve by reading and leveraging this reference architecture.
