Now that VMworld is in full swing, I have had the opportunity to talk to a considerable amount of VMware Service Providers, Customers, and Cloud Consumers.  Everyone has asked the question what does the AWS announcement mean for [Insert vCAN, vCA, IBM] as cloud providers. Recently I gave a presentation at VMworld alongside Rick Vanover where we discussed how you can leverage the cloud for backup image storage. So on that topic, I wanted to provide some information on how you can leverage vCloud Air to provide you with an endpoint for Veeam backups. First let’s take a high level look at what Veeam has to offer. Veeam uses a backup appliance, much in the same way a number of other vendors do. This appliance essentially takes snapshots of virtual machines running either on vSphere or Hyper-V. Once it has these snapshot images, it moves them off to an external storage area, whether it be a physical SAN or virtual storage in the cloud.   Recently one of the projects I have been leading is to create reference architectures for vCloud Air. Lots of people have been asking me what the reference architectures actually cover, and what is the purpose of these. Firstly, I have produced a quick over video talking about a specific reference architecture “Data Center Extension”.  In this video I walk through at a high level what you can expect to achieve by reading and leveraging this reference architecture. Working over in vCloud Air Tech Marketing, I have been focusing a lot on Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery.  Recently I wrote a solution brief (Colotti started it, however I finished it) covering the advanced architecture required to implement a full Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery solution.
