Clarifying the confusion on the VMware Cloud Strategy

Clarifying the confusion on the VMware Cloud Strategy

Now that VMworld is in full swing, I have had the opportunity to talk to a considerable amount of VMware Service Providers, Customers, and Cloud Consumers.  Everyone has asked the question what does the AWS announcement mean for [Insert vCAN, vCA, IBM] as cloud providers. From a vCloud perspective, adding AWS into the mix is simply just another VMware operated cloud provider.  VMware powers over 4200 service providers around the globe offering capabilities from Managed Services, Hosting and Cloud Services.  This announcement doesn’t change that, so how does it actually all fit together?  Lets try clarifying the confusion on the VMware Cloud Strategy with a diagram; This diagram speaks a thousand words (provided by Jenny Fong for VMworld). vCloud Air Lets start by looking at VMware vCloud Air, this is a VMware owned, VMware operated public cloud.  It runs in a VMware managed data center, is operated and supported by […]

Leverage the cloud for a Veeam backup repository

Recently I gave a presentation at VMworld alongside Rick Vanover where we discussed how you can leverage the cloud for backup image storage. So on that topic, I wanted to provide some information on how you can leverage vCloud Air to provide you with an endpoint for Veeam backups. First let’s take a high level look at what Veeam has to offer. Veeam uses a backup appliance, much in the same way a number of other vendors do. This appliance essentially takes snapshots of virtual machines running either on vSphere or Hyper-V. Once it has these snapshot images, it moves them off to an external storage area, whether it be a physical SAN or virtual storage in the cloud. It’s a very simple, but elegant solution that a number of VMware and Microsoft IT shops have deployed. One of the great lesser known features of Veeam is Cloud Gateway. Essentially […]

VMware VMworld vCloud Air must see sessions

vCloud Air Reference Architecture released

Recently one of the projects I have been leading is to create reference architectures for vCloud Air. Lots of people have been asking me what the reference architectures actually cover, and what is the purpose of these. Firstly, I have produced a quick over video talking about a specific reference architecture “Data Center Extension”.  In this video I walk through at a high level what you can expect to achieve by reading and leveraging this reference architecture. These reference architectures are expected to be used to supplement the VMware Validated Designs for the Software Defined Data Center.  By leveraging this reference architecture you will be able to achieve a true hybrid cloud deployment as shown below: What can you expect from the vCloud Air Reference Architecture? Well here is a quick snippet from the overview section: This document describes, in general terms, what is required to extend an on-premises […]

advanced architecture design for cloud-based disaster recovery

Advanced Architecture Design for Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery

Working over in vCloud Air Tech Marketing, I have been focusing a lot on Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery.  Recently I wrote a solution brief (Colotti started it, however I finished it) covering the advanced architecture required to implement a full Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery solution. This solution brief walks people through considerations around Authentication and DNS, leveraging data seeding for replication, and how to failback to your on-premises environment. Here is a sneak preview of some of the content from the Advanced Architecture Design for Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Solution Brief: Conclusions Assuring continuity of applications and data through enterprise-grade Disaster Recovery practices is a prerequisite for any full-scale enterprise hybrid architecture using VMware vCloud Air or any cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service solution. The examples reviewed here extend the vCloud Air use cases to include Disaster Recovery in the cloud, with Clear, simplified setup and migration processes Multiple options to support the DR environment with […]

Nested ESXi on vCloud Air – Links

So for quite some time now, lots of people keep asking me about running Nested ESXi on vCloud Air and is it possible. The answer to that question is YES, you can run Nested ESXi on vCloud Air today. George Kobar, who is a colleague of mine in Technical Marketing wrote a great blog article on how to run Nested ESXi on vCloud Air. This got me thinking about how many other people have been doing this? Is it as popular as I thought? Are people just asking the question, or are they actually doing it? I started doing some searches on the internet for blog articles from the community, and I found quite a few on this topic, which is why I am writing this article. I thought it would be good to list all the articles in one place to make it easy for people to find. I […]
