PowerCLI for vCloud Director–Have your say ! VMware have recently announced a survey on the PowerCLI site, this has been setup to poll people for what they think would be the best way to introduce cmdlets for vCloud Director, personally I think it’s a great move and proves that VMware really does listen to their customers opinions. Their questions not only ask how you would like the vCloud cmdlets distributed but also if you would prefer common objects like VMs and Users to be new cmdlets based towards vCloud director or to add these as additional parameters to the existing cmdlets. vCloud Director appliance launched for evaluations

On Friday the VMware vCloud Director virtual appliance was launched. This appliance has been designed to enable you to evaluate and test vCloud Director. If you want to stand up a small PoC environment then this is the appliance for you. Some key features of the appliance: Auto generates certificates Auto configures local database Auto configure HTTP and console proxy NIC’s This appliance really does make it easy for someone with no vCloud Director knowledge to simply stand up a small cloud. This appliance is purely designed for evaluations, so if you are looking for something to deploy in production then this is not the appliance for you. You would not be able to attach vCenter Chargeback to this appliance for example, due to the configuration of the local database. vCloud Director Plugin available for vCenter Orchestrator

Yesterday the vCloud Director Plugin was launched for vCenter Orchestrator. This is a feature rich plugin that allows you to orchestrate everything from deploying a catalog, to creating a pVDC, through to deleting users. Download now to release the potential of orchestration in your cloud. This version improves the performance and addresses a number of issues including full support for all new API features of the VMware vCloud API 1.5, including VPN, 5-tuple firewall, linked clones in vDCs, and full feature parity with the API. Additionally, it includes support for triggering workflows based on receiving vCloud messages from events in vCloud Director, as well as workflows that support vCloud Director’s blocking tasks mechanism. These mechanisms allow Orchestrator workflows to dynamically respond to events in your cloud, and allow you to implement task-based integrations with third-party systems. How to enable Elastic Virtual DataCenters in vCloud Director

I have been playing around with my home lab today, and trying to work out how to enable Elastic Virtual Data Centers within vCloud Director. First of all, what is an Elastic vDC you ask? An Elastic vDC allows you to add more resources to a Provider vDC when they become consumed/constrained. Why would you need to do this? Well first off this only works with the Pay-as-you-go Allocation model. Pay-as-you-go is exactly that, you have no idea as a provider on how many VMs will be deployed. Potentially there is the possibility that all your resources will be consumed, and your consumers will not be able to deploy any more workloads. During VMworld Chris Colotti and I presented quite a few group discussions on VMware vCloud. During these discussions some people were amazed to find out how many components/products are involved in making up the vCloud environment. When planning on building a VMware vCloud, you are not just installing vCloud Director and pointing it to vSphere, you are designing/building a whole Ecosystem.
