vCloud vApp Design considerations – Part 1

This is carrying on from my session at PEX that I presented with Hugo Phan. A few people have asked if I could provide some information of vApp Use Cases, and what design considerations are involved in this.  This is part 1 of a 4 part article. So lets start off with some logical considerations vApp Logical Design The list below shows some of the basic design considerations that you need to consider when putting together your vApp. Use the latest version of VMware Tools Select 1 vCPU as a default UNLESS specifically required Use VMXNET3 network adapters where applicable Secure Virtual Machines as you would standard VMs or physical Use standard Virtual Machine naming conventions Virtual Hardware version – CPU intensive workloads require HW version 9 One thing that people also need to bear in mind (and has been mentioned many times previously) is that a vCloud vApp is different […]

VMworld 2013 Call for Papers Open

So straight after PEX it is time to start thinking of sessions that people would like to see at VMworld 2013.  Today the VMworld call for papers opened. I will be submitting four this year, hopefully one or two of them will get accepted, but the competition is tough, and looking at the guidelines for what to submit it will be even tougher this year. Be Original –Attendees do not want to see the same presentations as last year and are looking for the latest innovation in technology. Spend time developing your title, abstract, outline, and session takeaways. These will be key factors in determining whether your session is selected and can affect session attendance. Be Educational – Attendees do not like being sold on your company. Be neutral and focus on the educational value of your presentation. All sales pitches and commercially focused submissions will be rejected. Be Timely – Make sure […]

VMware NSX Network Virtualization announced – My take

Today VMware has announced the new network virtualization product VMware NSX.  How cool is that name by the way? Now normally I dont write articles on the new products we announce (excluding vCloud Director related), but if anyone watched my Chinwag with Mike Laverick, I find this one of particular interest.  My personal opinion is that this is the next major wave of virtualization, and VMware is at the forefront of the technology again.  Back in the day when I was a Windows NT 3rd Line Engineer, I got involved in networking a lot more, even passing my CCNA (dont ask me a single question about it, I have forgotten more than I learnt) but I have always found the networking side of the datacenter infrastructure interesting.  Now I am no Kamau Wanguhu, but I know a thing or two about networking, so this technology for me is of awesome […]

Install VMware Workstation 9 on Linux Ubuntu :: How To

This is a quick How to Install VMware Workstation 9 on Linux Ubuntu is a relatively straight forward task. However as I am not a Linux expert (I much prefer Windows and not ashamed to admit it), I had to do a very tiny amount of head scratching.  So it doesn’t happen again I have wrote this article for my own reference. The following steps are how I installed Workstation on Ubuntu Download the installer from VMware’s website.  The build number I downloaded was 1031769 Once downloaded open a terminal session and navigate to the location of the installation bundle. Run the command: sudo chmod +x VMware-Workstation-Full-9.0.2-1031769.x86_64.bundle This sets the permissions on the installation file to be executable. (This was the step that caused me to scratch my head for a few minutes.) Run the command: sudo ./VMware-Workstation-Full-9.0.2-1031769.x86_64.bundle Follow the on screen installation wizard Installation is complete

My “Chinwag” with Mike Laverick

So last week before PEX I had a chinwag with Mike Laverick. This was the first time I had done one of these, but found it thoroughly enjoyable. Mike had a few questions he wanted to ask me, but it wasn’t regimented, and found ourselves off tack quite a few times. Q1. What for you are the stand-out aspects of vCloud Director? Q2. Perhaps you can begin with a quick description of a Provider vDC…. Now Provider vDC can contain more than one HA/DRS cluster – what’s the logic behind where the VM gets placed? Q3. Do you think the changes behind the Provider vDC might ultimately lead to changes in design or best practises. For many a HA/DRS cluster represents a desecrate amount of compute/storage/networking – you could almost call it a virtual silo. Do you see that changing…? Q4. Can I ask what are you working on currently […]
