vCloud vApp Design and Use Case – Part 2

This article is part 2 of my vCloud vApp design considerations and use cases definition.  Part 1 can be read by clicking here. In this article we will look at the logical design of vApp use cases.  I have spoke about these in the past in my vCloud Director Networking 101 post, but never really spoke about the specific use case. Use Case 1 – vApp Network Isolated This use case would primarily be used for development and test scenarios, where there is a requirement for vApps to be completely isolated.  In this scenario multiple vApps of the same configuration can be deployed without risk of conflict, since there is no external connectivity available and all network traffic within the vApp is isolated at Layer 2.   The characteristics of these vApps are: VMs are connected together on isolated vApp networks No connectivity between multiple vApps or to organization networks Same configuration can […]

vCloud vApp Design considerations – Part 1

This is carrying on from my session at PEX that I presented with Hugo Phan. A few people have asked if I could provide some information of vApp Use Cases, and what design considerations are involved in this.  This is part 1 of a 4 part article. So lets start off with some logical considerations vApp Logical Design The list below shows some of the basic design considerations that you need to consider when putting together your vApp. Use the latest version of VMware Tools Select 1 vCPU as a default UNLESS specifically required Use VMXNET3 network adapters where applicable Secure Virtual Machines as you would standard VMs or physical Use standard Virtual Machine naming conventions Virtual Hardware version – CPU intensive workloads require HW version 9 One thing that people also need to bear in mind (and has been mentioned many times previously) is that a vCloud vApp is different […]

My top 10 vCloud People to follow

So with all the new posts flying around on the top 10 people to follow for Virtualization, for Storage and Cloud amongst others, I thought I would write my own Top 10 vCloud people to follow. This is purely based on my opinion and I am not going to rank these, it is just people I follow everyday to help with my daily work. Kendrick Coleman – @kendrickcoleman – I’m Kenny Coleman (Kendrick is my full name), and live in Louisville, KY. I started my career off as a windows system engineer after graduating from the University of Kentucky, which lead me wanting to get back into networking and landed me my first certification, CCNA. As a Cisco and systems engineer, it lead me into my new passion of virtualization. I’ve been honored by VMware with the vExpert award for my contributions to the VMware community and being a virtualization evangelist. […]

SPS NotEnoughLicenses error in vCloud Director debug log

Building a new vCloud Director environment today, I was experiencing issues trying to deploy a new vAPP. Every time I deployed a vAPP I got the error Failed to Create. So what was going on?  I could deploy VMs in vSphere, vCloud Director was deploying the VMs in vSphere, and I could power them on manually from vSphere!?!. Clicking on the error gave me no information at all, and it showed that the VM was successfully being deployed too!   I needed to take a look at the log files on the VCD cell to see whats happening.  I SSH’d to the cell and issued the following commands: cd /opt/vmware/vcloud-director/logs cat vcloud-container-debug.log | grep -i error 2013-01-14 10:44:10,288 | ERROR    | sf-activity-pool-2 | SpbmServiceImpl | SPS NotEnoughLicenses failure of 1 attempts to make SPS call at VC 2013-01-14 10:44:12,288 | ERROR    | sf-activity-pool-2 | SpbmServiceImpl | SPS NotEnoughLicenses failure of […]

How to add a new storage profile to an existing PvDC in vCloud Director 5.1

I got asked a question by @erikbussink today about whether you can add in newly created storage profile to an already existing Provider VDC (PvDC). I initially looked in the wrong area for this, and answered no! However after opening my eyes, I realised that it is actually possible and I should have realised straight away. Before trying to add in a new profile, first make sure you have refreshed the storage profiles in vCloud Director by following my previous article. To add a new profile follow the steps below: Login to vCloud Director Select Manage and Monitor Select Provider VDC Select Storage Profiles from the tab along the top Click the green + (plus) and you will be prompted with the add storage profile window Select the storage profile, click add and then ok You will then see the new storage profile assigned with a green tick showing you […]
