How to disable vSphere Host Cache Configuration

Today playing in my lab I had an issue running some VMs on a SSD.  It turns out the Host Cache Configuration was causing some issues running the VMs on the same SSD.  You enable host cache when creating a datastore on a SSD, but how do you disable it?  Its not an option on the datastore properties.

To disable Host Cache Configuration follow the steps below:

  1. Select Configuration Tab
  2. Select Host Cache Configuration under software
  3. Right Click on the SSD Datastore and Select Properties
  4. Disable Checkbox for Allocate space for host cache
  5. Click OK
  6. DONE!!

Thats it, host cache has been disabled.

    Hi David,
What issues were you seeing with running vm’s on the same ssd on which you have the esxi host cache? I thought this was a common practice in homelabs..?

    Great blog..!

Strangely, performance was terrible. 15 minutes to login to a W2k8 server. Once host cache was disabled, everything ran like a dream…

        Thanks,
Did you ever find out why this happened? I was under the impression that it should be possible to use both on a SSD..

No, never found out. I also expected it to work. I know of other people who have this feature enabled with no issues.

Thanks for this, I needed to type up some instructions but did not have a system with host cache enabled to test!
